Commission Calculator

Commission and total pay from sales, rate, base, and quota

This commission calculator works out your sales commission and total pay. Enter your total sales and commission rate, and optionally a base salary and a quota (a threshold you must exceed before commission applies). It shows your commission, total earnings, and effective commission rate.

Assumes a single flat commission rate on commissionable sales. Tiered or accelerator plans that raise the rate at higher volumes require a custom calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate commission?

Multiply your total sales by the commission rate (as a decimal). For example, $50,000 in sales at a 6% commission rate is $50,000 × 0.06 = $3,000. If your plan only pays commission on sales above a quota, subtract the quota from your sales first, then apply the rate.

What is a typical commission rate?

It varies widely by industry: retail and inside sales often run 3–10%, real estate is around 5–6% (usually split between agents), SaaS and B2B sales commonly pay 8–15% of the deal, and independent reps can earn 15–30%. Many roles combine a base salary with a lower commission rate.

What is a base plus commission plan?

You receive a fixed base salary plus commission on your sales. It gives income stability while rewarding performance. Enter your base pay to see your total earnings. A "commission-only" plan has no base — your entire pay is the commission.

What is a sales quota or threshold?

A quota is a sales target you must exceed before commission kicks in (or before a higher rate applies). If your plan pays commission only on sales above a threshold, enter it here — the calculator applies your rate only to the amount above the quota.

Is commission taxed differently?

Commission is ordinary income. If paid as a separate check, employers often withhold it at the flat 22% supplemental rate like a bonus; if paid with your regular salary, it is withheld normally. Either way, your final tax is based on your total annual income.
