Tile Calculator

Tiles and boxes needed for any room, including waste

This tile calculator tells you how many tiles and boxes to buy for a floor or wall. Enter the room size in feet and the tile size in inches, choose a waste allowance for your layout, and it rounds up to full tiles and boxes.

Always buy a little extra from the same dye lot for future repairs. Subtract large openings (islands, windows) from the area for big rooms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tiles do I need?

Divide the total floor area by the area of one tile. For example, a 120 sq ft room with 1 sq ft tiles needs 120 tiles before waste. Always add 10–15% extra for cuts, breakage, and future repairs.

How much extra tile should I buy for waste?

Add 10% for a simple straight (grid) layout, 15% for diagonal layouts, and up to 20% for herringbone or intricate patterns. Rooms with many corners, angles, or obstacles need more.

How do I calculate square footage of a tile?

Multiply the tile length by width in inches, then divide by 144 to convert to square feet. A 12″×12″ tile is 144 ÷ 144 = 1 sq ft; a 12″×24″ tile is 288 ÷ 144 = 2 sq ft.

Should I buy tiles by the box?

Yes — tiles are sold in boxes covering a set area or count. Buy full boxes and keep at least one spare box from the same dye lot, since color can vary slightly between production batches.

Does this work for walls too?

Yes. Enter the wall height and width instead of room length and width. For a backsplash or shower, calculate each wall section separately and subtract large openings like windows.
