How does the sunrise and sunset calculator work?

It uses the NOAA solar position algorithm to compute the sun's exact position for your latitude, longitude, and date, then finds the moments the sun crosses the horizon (accounting for atmospheric refraction and the sun's radius). The result is accurate to about a minute for most locations.

What latitude and longitude do I enter?

Enter the coordinates of your location in decimal degrees — positive for north and east, negative for south and west. For example, New York is 40.71, −74.01 and Sydney is −33.87, 151.21. You can find any place's coordinates by searching it on a map.

Why do I need to set a UTC offset?

The calculation produces times in Universal Time; the UTC offset converts them to the local clock at your location. Enter your standard offset (e.g. −5 for US Eastern, +1 for Central Europe) and add 1 if daylight saving time is in effect on that date.

What is solar noon?

Solar noon is the moment the sun is highest in the sky and due south (in the Northern Hemisphere) — the midpoint between sunrise and sunset. It rarely matches 12:00 on the clock because of your position within your time zone and the equation of time.

What are polar night and midnight sun?

Near the poles, the sun can stay below the horizon for a full day (polar night) in winter, or above it for a full day (midnight sun) in summer. When that happens, the calculator reports it instead of a rise or set time.
