Frequently Asked Questions
How do I write a check amount in words?
Write the dollar amount in words, then the cents as a fraction. Example: $1,234.56 = One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars. Start at the far left of the line, use a capital first letter, and draw a line through any unused space to prevent fraud.
How are large numbers named in English?
Thousand (10^3), million (10^6), billion (10^9), trillion (10^12), quadrillion (10^15), quintillion (10^18). In the British system, a billion used to mean 10^12 (a million millions), but the American system (10^9) is now standard globally in business and science.
How do I write ordinal numbers (first, second, third)?
Ordinals: 1st (first), 2nd (second), 3rd (third), 4th-19th (fourth...nineteenth), 20th (twentieth), 21st (twenty-first), 22nd (twenty-second), 23rd (twenty-third), 24th-29th (twenty-fourth...twenty-ninth). Pattern: most end in -th, except those ending in 1 (-st), 2 (-nd), 3 (-rd).
When should numbers be spelled out in writing?
Style guides vary, but common rules: spell out numbers zero through nine, use numerals for 10 and above. Always spell out at sentence start. Use numerals for specific measurements (5 miles, 3 hours). In checks and legal documents, always spell out dollar amounts to prevent alteration.
What is the difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers?
Cardinal numbers count quantity: one, two, three, four... They answer how many? Ordinal numbers indicate position: first, second, third, fourth... They answer which order? In English, most ordinals add -th to the cardinal: seven → seventh, nineteen → nineteenth.
