What are the mean, median, and mode?

They are the three main measures of central tendency. The mean is the arithmetic average (sum divided by count). The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often. Each summarizes a data set in a different way.

How do you find the median of an even set of numbers?

Sort the numbers, then take the two values in the middle and average them. For example, in 2, 4, 6, 8 the two middle values are 4 and 6, so the median is (4 + 6) ÷ 2 = 5.

Can a data set have more than one mode?

Yes. If two or more values tie for the most occurrences, the set is multimodal and all of them are modes. If every value appears exactly once, the set has no mode. This calculator lists every value that ties for the highest frequency.

When should I use the median instead of the mean?

Use the median when your data has outliers or is skewed, because the mean gets pulled toward extreme values while the median does not. For example, median household income is reported instead of mean income because a few very high earners would distort the average.

What is the range?

The range is the difference between the largest and smallest values in the data set (maximum minus minimum). It is the simplest measure of how spread out the data is, though it only reflects the two extreme values.
