How is life expectancy calculated?

This calculator starts from the current U.S. average life expectancy for your sex (2024 CDC data: 76.5 years for men, 81.4 for women), then adjusts up or down based on well-documented lifestyle factors — smoking, exercise, diet, and alcohol. The result is a rough personalized estimate, not a prediction.

How much does smoking affect life expectancy?

A lot. Research from the U.S. Surgeon General finds that lifelong smoking reduces life expectancy by roughly 10 years on average. Quitting reverses much of that risk over time — former smokers regain years compared with those who keep smoking.

Can lifestyle really add years to my life?

Yes. Large studies show that not smoking, regular physical activity, a healthy diet, and moderate alcohol use are each linked to meaningful gains in life expectancy — often several years each. Combined, healthy habits can add a decade or more versus an unhealthy lifestyle.
