Frequently Asked Questions
What is ideal body weight?
Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimate of a healthy weight for a given height and sex, based on population studies. Multiple formulas exist (Robinson, Miller, Devine, Hamwi). They vary slightly — the average across formulas gives a reasonable target range.
Is there one perfect ideal weight?
No. Ideal weight depends on muscle mass, bone density, age, body composition, and personal health goals. A heavily muscled athlete may weigh more than IBW formulas suggest while being extremely healthy. Use IBW as a rough guideline, not a strict target.
How is ideal weight different from BMI?
BMI uses a range (18.5–24.9) rather than a single number. The "ideal" BMI center point (~22.5) gives a similar result to IBW formulas for average builds. IBW formulas were designed for clinical drug dosing, not general weight goals.
Can I be healthy above my ideal weight?
Yes. Research shows that fitness level (cardiorespiratory fitness) is a better predictor of health outcomes than weight alone. A slightly overweight person who exercises regularly often has better health outcomes than a sedentary person at "ideal" weight.
How do I reach my ideal weight?
Create a modest calorie deficit (300–500 calories/day) through diet and exercise. Aim to lose 0.5–1 kg (1–2 lbs) per week. Rapid weight loss loses muscle; slow, steady loss preserves muscle while losing fat. Use our TDEE calculator to find your calorie needs.
