How do you calculate horsepower from torque?

Horsepower = torque (lb-ft) × RPM ÷ 5252. For example, an engine making 300 lb-ft at 5,000 RPM produces 300 × 5000 ÷ 5252 ≈ 286 HP. The constant 5252 comes from the definition of one horsepower (33,000 ft-lb per minute).

Why do torque and horsepower cross at 5252 RPM?

Because HP = torque × RPM ÷ 5252, the two values are numerically equal whenever RPM equals 5252. On a dyno chart the horsepower and torque curves always intersect at that point.

What is the difference between torque and horsepower?

Torque is rotational force — how hard the engine twists. Horsepower is the rate of doing work — torque combined with how fast the engine spins. Torque gets you moving; horsepower determines top speed and how quickly work is done.

How do I convert horsepower to kilowatts?

Multiply horsepower by 0.7457 to get kilowatts (1 HP = 0.7457 kW). Metric horsepower (PS or CV) is slightly different: 1 PS = 0.7355 kW, so 100 HP ≈ 101.4 PS.

What is a good amount of horsepower for a car?
